There is usually a sense of being threatened, even though there might not be any physical altercations with the new dog. If the new dog is a puppy, the existing one is more apt to receive the new arrival than a mature animal. Most times, the older dog establishes who is in charge early and if the puppy respects his position, there might be little problem between the two.

If the older dog is much larger than the other is, there can be confrontations even after the new dog has been in the house for weeks. Whatever praise or reward you have always given the existing dog before the new arrival must be maintained, as the new dog is trained and rewarded in similar fashion.
The new addition might not pose any problems, if the older dog is friendly to people and tolerant of other animals. In just days they might even become friends! If they are given a chance dogs will often establish a bond, just remember that every situation is different.
