does anyone have a recipe for natural home made dog food?

My mini doxie is overweight, lethargic, and has really bad skin allergies. I have tried EXPENSIVE dog food from the vet, yogurt, local honey, malesab shampoo, predisone….nothing works. I want to try to make her food from natural ingredients. Any ideas?

Yeah, raw meat. You can blend it with a few veggies and some fruit if you want, but raw meat should make up the majority of his diet.

We tried this one on our sister’s dog for 3 months. It doesn’t help all that much if it is a staph infection (I assume vet has ruled that out), but does help with allergies. Show to your vet as s/he may suggest some vitamins as well.

I do NOT recommend raw meat. Cook the meat. People who feed raw meat diets to dogs have not yet lost a dog to e.coli or salmonella. My grandmother raised champion dachsunds on a homemade cooked diet.

Check the archives of the daily drool or buy one of the cook books from BBHC badgerland basset hound club. Both have recipes for natural foods for dogs. They have become very popular now with this whole melamine scare.

Both of those sites are for people with bassets but if you go onto the daily drool and ask there would people there who will send you a ton of recipes. They are very helpful people. Obviously I am a basset person as well. Weight is always a concern with bassets as well so I’m sure someone there can direct you to the correct recipes for hypoallergenic and weight reduction type home cooked food.

    Good luck

You can fry them up with some onions and green peppers. Yummy.

Have allergy tests run at your vets. They take a little blood and send it to a lab, and you’ll get results within the next week. It will tell you exactly what he is allergic too, instead of guessing and maybe putting those ingredients into the food. Also, he might not be allergic to foods at all. He could be allergic to dust mites, which would contribute to allergies all year long, or he could be allergic to certain grasses, in which his allergies would get worse in the summer.

It’s not cheap to do- I think it runs ~$200, but it is well worth it to finally figure out what is wrong with your little guy. Once they figure out what he is allergic to, they can make allergy shots for him that will build up his tolerance to the allergin. It works better than any other allergy treatment I’ve ever seen.

    ****Note to person above me*****
    Onions are toxic to dogs.
