Has any one ever tried “Natural Way” natural dog food?

I have been feeding my 4 month old Goldendoodle IAMS Puppy Formula (which is what my breeder was feeding her). However, I am not particularly happy with the ingredients in it because it has a lot of by products and contains a lot of grains such as corn.

My groomer told me that corn can cause allergies in dogs, and it can cause a “doggie smell” that is almost constant… as well as skin and digestion problems.

So I have been researching dog foods, and I came across a brand that is supposedly “endorsed” by Lassie, and it is called “Natural Way”. The first five ingredients seemed pretty good…

Lamb Meal, Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Ground Rice, Chicken Meal,…

I was wondering if anyone has tried it and what do you think of it??

You can view more info about this food at http://www.lassie.com/naturalway/index.html.

NOTE: This is not a debate about the best dog food… or why IAMS is good or bad… or anything like this. I am simply looking to find out if anyone has tried this food!!
Like I said, the ingredients in “Natural Way” seemed “healthier” that the IAMS. I found that IAMS had a lot of corn and by products while Natural Way did not. I am also wondering if anyone eliminated corn for health problems in their dog?

We’ve never been able to get it here, however, a breeder in Alaska swore by it (we are in Canada).

I currently have both my rottie and great dane on natural ways for large breed wieght control. It cost less than Iams and its is just as good if not better.

Thanks for the info, my husky is on Nutro- Natural Choice, she just turned one years old. No by products in it., and if your dog does not like it they will refund your money.

Iams is a very very low quality food.
Here is something I found on the net – some of the numbers/letter grades don’t match up in the ones that are already added up so its a good idea to add yours up just to make sure.

How to grade your dog’s food: Start with a grade of 100:

    1) For every listing of “by-product”, subtract 10 points
    2) For every non-specific animal source (“meat” or “poultry”, meat, meal
Or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
    3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
    4) For every grain “mill run” or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points
    5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first
Five ingredients (I.e. “ground brown rice”, “brewerâ?Ts rice”, “rice
Flour” are all the same grain), subtract 5 points
    6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2
Meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
    7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3points
    9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 morepoints
    10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2
    Points
    11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is
Allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
    12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
    13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isnâ?Tt allergic
    To wheat), subtract 2 points
    14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnâ?Tt allergic
    To beef), subtract 1 point
    15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
    Extra Credit:
    1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
    2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add
    5 points
    3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
    4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
    5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
    6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points
    7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points
8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
    9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points
    10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
    11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
    12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the
First one; count “chicken” and “chicken meal” as only one protein
Source, but “chicken” and “” as 2 different sources), add 1 point
    13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
    14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are
    Pesticide-free, add 1 point

To much rice product in it, that is not so great either. Try Nutro Natural chicken, rice and oatmeal. I have my pups on the puppy formula and my adults on the adult formula and it is a good kibble and wont break the bank. I feed the natural choice, but they do have a holistic formula too.

We feed Eukanuba lamb and rice to all our dogs. We show and have had no skin or coat dander problems. Eukanuba is the preium product of the Iams company. We also feed 1 lb of fried Hamberger per day to each of our dogs in the evening. We also give a vitamin with omega fatty acides in it. Hope this helps.

I have a dog that had lot of skin problems, I must have tried every kind of dog food but finally, I tried Nutro brand. She finally grew hair where she was missing it, her skin is now clear of any bumps and no more itching. Her fur is shinier and softer and I can tell by her behavior she is happier because she feels better. Of course, just like people, you have to try which one works best, but I found that Nutro has helped many dogs when it comes to skin and digestive problems. They have special food for digestive problems, for older dogs, etc. they have dry food and canned wet food. You can find it at a pet store i.e., PetSupermarket, PETCCO, PetSmart or a private pet shop……you should also give your dog omega supplements since they are very good for their skin and fur. Good luck.

    never heard of it

Don’t go by them saying Lassie eats it. I have a book written by Lassies trainer who said he has had Lassie endorse dog foods a number of times but Lassie actually only eats home made Stew everyday.

  17. buggz_41 15th May 2010 12:48 pm

Hello, I have a dog that was continuesly itchy, I knew it wasn’t fleas, so I changed his food, this food I choose only has one protien and one carbohydrate, it seems to be working!
I totally agree with the idea of grains giving dogs allergies, since when have you seen a dog in a corn field, or eat barely and oats??
Dogs eat veggies, fruit and Meat !!!!not grain!

  18. kattlepie 15th May 2010 1:07 pm

acorrding to the ingrediants you listed, there is still alot of grain involved.i don’t think dogs can even digest it.i’m not sure.your need to check on a few sites, but i feed mine a corn based food, and they do well.in the old days they used to grind 2 kinds of corn meal.one for their bread and the other for the dogs, which they also made into bread, but was a corser meal.
