Proper socialization is necessary to turn a dog into a well adjusted pet that can get along well with people and other pets in any given situation. Socialization develops the dog into a good canine citizen that will be ideal companion for a lifetime. A well socialized dog is a happy and well behaved member of the family as socialization prevents the development of unwanted behaviors. A first time dog owner may wonder at the need to socialize the dog and how dog socialization can be done.
Man’s best friend are known to be social creatures but just like us humans, our furry friends have different personalities too. Expect a nervous or shy dog to react with fear or aggression when exposed to new faces or situations. On the other hand, a dog with a dominant personality will always try to be the alpha male whether the pack consists of humans or animals. Taking a dog for a pet entails more that giving the dog its basic needs. It is the responsibility of the pet owner to ensure that the pet is properly socialized so that it will grow into a well adjusted pet that can adapt to any situation and can interact with people and animals.
Socialization must take place when the puppy is between 8 to 16 weeks old. This does not mean that it is futile to socialize older dogs. However, socializing an older dog would require more patience and persistence. Socializing puppies would be easier as apart from having a curious nature; puppies have not yet formed hard to break habits.
As soon as the vet has given the GET-GO, the puppy must be introduced to everything that it will be exposed to when it gets older. Grooming will get the dog accustomed to being touched. By grooming the dog it will get used to being handled so that it will not be aggressive if petted by unfamiliar people.
Let the pet mingle with other dogs by taking the dog to the local dog park or enrolling the pet to an obedience class. The dog must be introduced to as many people and exposed to as many situations as possible. Whenever there’s a chance take the dog along. Entice the dog to respond well to socialization by using treats as rewards. All these extra efforts will be all paid up by having a well adjusted pet.
