I have a question about my 2 year old pit bull and dog food?
- admin in category: dog natural food
My mother in law is visiting, she helped me feed my dogs today. I feed my pit 1 can of Pedigree wet food and, 1 cup of Pedigree dry dog food twice a day. I noticed my mother in law poured water in his dog food. Why did she do this? I was so stunned I didn’t ask.

It helps lubricate the biscuits, if the dog eats fast it stops it from getting blocked up. Also makes a nice gravy to go with the food.

She doesn’t know the ways of your house… she might of assumed that’s the water bowl (if it was empty.) If not, I would suggest asking her or telling your husband to talk to her. That’s very strange. Could the dog have upset her earlier? She also might of thought the food looked too dry and wanted to help your dog chew/swallow it better. I’m sure it was not malicious.
Good luck!

Well, for one, pedigree is a HORRIBLE food! I would highly recomend you look in to finding a better food. Science Diet or Eukanuba would be the lowest quality I would recomend going. Wet food is also not that great for dogs, it should be fed more as a treat with the food. Maybe 1 can and 1 cup dry in the morning, and then 2 cups dry at night. That is a much better combination for the dog
For two, a lot of people add water to dog food. If a dog is older, it helps to soften food so they can chew it easier. It realeses the scent of the food so pickier dogs are more enticed to eat it. It gives the food a more pleasing texture for the dog. But unless you have to, I would always recomend sticking with the dry food. The hard kibbles help to clean the dogs teeth.
Your mother in law may be just use to feeding the dogs this way. I know my fiances mother feeds her dogs with water added to the kibbles because they are older, so Im sure she would probably do it with ours just out of habit. Its nothing bad or anything

Sometimes dogs like to have their hard kibble softened.
Pedigree is a horrible food by the way. Eukanuba, Pedigree, Bill-Jack, Iams, and Science Diet are all crap!
I would switch to:
Canidae
Innova
Orijen
California Natural
Wellness (Core)
Solid Gold
Blue Buffalo

i have a 3 year old rottie that was adopted with barely any top teeth,,the ones she does have are very broken and nasty. the vet thinks she lived in a kennel or spent too much time in one and ruined her teeth chewing on the bars and or concrete. she had a horrible time trying to eat her dinner and would usually give up. we found that wetting her food till soft she is now able to enjoy eating and does not take so long.
im not sure if there is a medical reason to wet food or not, some people just do it.
i have a lab/pit mix also and i would think feeding can food would get QUITE expensive? lucky you for being able to do that

Eww, Pedigree? I’d like to know why she fed it too! Oh, you mean the water
. Seriously though, look into switching to a better food.
Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to dump cheap leftovers in. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.
Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.
Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.
Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n’ Bits, Beneful, Ol’Roy.
Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae, Fromm, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Variety, Nature’s Logic.
Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients… this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!
A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diet’s include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! and Sold Gold Barking At The Moon.
Some of the high end foods can be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness and Solid Gold. If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them.
Remember that foods should be switched gradually, especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.
Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:

I have a friend that has a three yr old large pit bull. and she quite often runs out of dog food and feeds him people food like rice or actually just about anything that i think is “not” meant for dogs… but the dog seems fine and healthy except he keeps chewing on his back area just above his tail and so my question is is the dogs eating habits like this bad for him or will he be ok since he has been eating this way his whole life? and also how much is the reccomended serving size for a large pit bull (when the dog stands on his hind legs he is taller than my friend and shes 5′ 2″ tall) she thinks he eats enough but he seems to be allways hungry…
