Can you tell me the total essentials for taking care of a dog?  I’m new to the dog ownership universe. I just adopted my first dog, a beautiful yellow lab I’ve named Lola, this month. A friend of a friend is a dog breeder locally. I paid a visit to her place a short while ago and right away was enamored with the dogs I met there. What was initially supposed to be just a lunch visit ended up turning into an all-day event with me staying for supper. Though I knew next to nothing about dogs, I made Shannon promise me a puppy as soon as possible. Shannon will also be my primary source for information as I care for Lola.

While Shannon’s a great resource, I’m also researching on my own about taking care of Lola. I don’t want to rely exclusively on one source of information. I’ve read up on dog medicine and pet food. Lola naturally has all her vaccinations and the necessary regular medicines for heartworm and fleas and whatnot. I’m feeding her this brand’s grain free formula of dog food. My first purchases in addition to these basics were of course a leash and collar, one of these dog crates, and the best of the orthopedic dog beds I found. I also purchased a pick of toys. What else is absolutely necessary to a dog’s happiness?

With Shannon at my side, I’m feeling very confident with my new puppy. I haven’t decided yet whether I’ll enroll her in obedience classes or whether we can train her well enough on our own. She’s a stellar puppy, so sweet and playful. I can’t wait to see what she’s like as she grows into a grownup dog. I realize that adopting her may have been a rather crazy split-second determination, but I know it’s the absolute best choice. Lola’s already such an essential friend to me.
