ok i’ve switched his dog food to natural balance sweet potatoes & fish formula…is this a good dog food? it?
- admin in category: Dog food products
kind of concerns me that the first two ingredients are sweet potatoes, and potatoes and the third and forth being fish and fish meal….however my dog is such a picky eater and i heard fish is good for picky eaters…despite that he does not want to eat this either…i want to kjonw if this is good enough for him? if it is i will just wait and let him get use to it or should i return it?

Its a good food. But it also depends on the dog. Some dogs like certain brands/types of food and not others. You might have to try another brand…or just let your dog get used to it.
What food did you switch him from?

If you want fish then you should try Taste of the Wild. First ingredient is Salmon, then ocean fish meal, then the sweet potatoes and potatoes, etc

It’s a great quality food and as long as your dog likes it, use it. Nothing wrong with potatoes being the first ingredients on the list. As long as there is no corn, wheat, gleutens, or by products in there, it’s good.

Natural Balance is typically a very high quality food.
Here is the ingredient list that I found:
Sweet Potatoes, Salmon, Salmon Meal, Canola Oil, Potato Fiber, Natural Flavor, Salmon Oil (a source of DHA), Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Methionine, Choline Chloride, Natural Mixed Tocopherols, Taurine, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Riboflavin (Vitamin B-2), Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Folic Acid.
In special and LID’s (limited ingredient diet), the grain or vegetable is often first. This is true in many lamb & rice foods as well. While it doesnt go over well with a few of the mindless rating sites, it doesn’t make it lower quality in reality.
The second and thrid ingredients are not “fish” and “fish meal”. They are Salmon and Salmon Meal. You always want to know the name of what you are feeding, meaning Salmon vs. ‘fish’. I was actually taken aback when I saw you say that the ingredients were just “fish”. This is the hallmark of a not-so-good food. “Meal” is dehydrated and reconstituted meat that’s often been ground. There’s nothing wrong with it – it’s byproducts that are bad.
The point of the LID’s is for sensitive tummies and for dogs who have lots of allergens. They can also be good for picky eaters, but higher end diets are often hard for dogs because they don’t have all the nasty additives to make it smell better.
If this were my dog, I’d stick with plain Natural Balance and would wet it with some hot water or low sodium broth to get him to eat it. As he gets used to it, I’d reduce the water content until it’s just the food.

Natural Balance is pretty good, but personally I prefer Blue Buffalo. It has a higher meat content. They have a fish and sweet potatoes food as well, and my previously picky eaters gobble it up! Good luck.
