The secret of a lady’s bag

In one of my earlier articles , I pointed out that these days our purses were not merely articles of necessity, a mere ‘repository for all our daily girlie needs’, but had become fashion statements. Our Editor raised his eyebrows and questioned the word ‘repository’! Thesaurus’ definition of ‘repository’ is deposit, store, stock, cache, heap! etc. OK, so I was using the word with my tongue in my cheek, but let’s investigate what we girls do carry in our purses .
Our daily basics would certainly be: purse, wallet/credit cards, cosmetic bag with make-up and perfume, brush & comb, hairspray, keys, diary, Filofax and note pad, pen, hankies, packet of wet wipes, glasses, purse hanger and cell phone with cellphone hook. wow !! and I guarantee this is a conservative selection ! We can add to this a somewhat by including two sets of keys – house and car: a spare pair of tights, our driving license and insurance, train or bus tickets, compact , and an i-phone. If you have a long bus or train ride to work, perhaps you like reading the paper or take a book ? Without doubt almost all of us have been guilty of stuffing the odd small piece of shopping into our handbag , but what a relief to know the Supermarket Cashier will automatically give us a carrier bag if we pop in to get a little something for our supper !
Now letsget rid of the basics, we can let our imagination wander and imagine what other strange and unusual things we confine to our bags !
Here are two examples!
I was surfing the web the other day and came across an interesting article! The was talking about the delicacies consumed by people in other countries. Amongst these delicacies were toasted giant hormigas (ants) from South America that her friend had told her about. Shopping in London’s Selfridges, she noticed shoppers gathered around a display. To her surprise, they were looking at jars of Colombian toasted giant hormigas price £15. She bought a jar, popped it into her handbag, to take to show her friend!
And the second example: We are a pet-orientated family, with two rescued dogs , but at the time had, sadly, just lost our two adult cats. Cruising along a narrow road through a small village on her way to visit friends, my daughter-in-law noticed a young feral kitten on a building site close to the road . On her return , the kitten was still there. She stopped her car and went to see the kitten only to find that he appeared to be alone – no sign of mother – and that he had a broken back leg. Feeling that the odds of survival were slim, she returned to her car and promptly emptied the contents of her purse onto the seat , and scooped up the kitten to bring home! In the car she used her Purse Hook to hang the bag from the headrest to keep it upright. Her mere necessity, ‘repository’ or fashion statement had become a portable ambulance! These clever little purse hangers certainly need to be strong!
Jake-the-Peg is now a naughty , healthy year old with a small sister, a rescued 4-week old girl kitten called Chica, both of whom love bags of any kind!
