Training the dog for loose leash walking
Dog owners know that the pet needs to be walked. Any breed of dog would need to be walked at least 20 to 30 minutes every day. Walking is a kind of daily ritual necessary to develop the physique, to give the dog mental stability and to prevent the formation of undesirable behaviors that commonly arise from boredom and from pent up energies.
A dog owner though has to have the necessary skill to walk the dog properly. Dogs are pack oriented and letting the pet walk ahead of you is practically letting the dog be the leader of the pack. The dog should benefit from the exercise but an owner of a dog that is hard to manage will have highly strung pet instead. This is why it is necessary to train the dog to behave properly while being walked on a leash. A dog that is properly trained to walk on leash would be more manageable and walking will be an enjoyable form of exercise both for the dog and for the owner.
In spite of the fact that dogs are considered as one of the intelligent animals, an owner must never assume that the dog is already accustomed to a collar and a leash. The training that will teach the dog to walk on a leash must be started as soon as the puppy is taken home from the breeder. First off is to allow the dog to be accustomed to wearing a lightweight collar. Expect the pup to try to dislodge the collar but when the pet is already comfortable with the collar you can now introduce the leash.
Familiarize the dog with the feel of the collar and leash by walking the dog around the house. Puppies are naturally exuberant and they tend to follow the master around. This means the dog would happily trot beside you.
A dog that has found an interesting scent or one that has heard an interesting sound would pull on the leash and try to break free. Stop walking at once. The action is aimed to make the dog understand that walking will be stopped if it continues on pulling on the leash. Continue walking, praise the dog and offer a treat if the dog settled down. Walking with a loose leash hanging between you and your dog cannot be learned by the dog instantly. A pet owner has to be patient and persistent to be able to teach the dog to walk on a leash but it is certainly rewarding to have a well trained pet.
