Understanding the hearing ability of dogs

It is not uncommon for people to associate dogs with paranormal happenings. Dogs are well loved animals but an owner can’t help but be annoyed with a pet that howls and stares into nothing especially on dark nights as this behavior is often associated with superstition beliefs that portends tragic incidents. Many dog owners believe that these animals can predict death. There is nothing mystic about the dog’s unusual abilities as dog experts put down these abilities to the dog’s heightened senses.
Dog owners would attest to the fact that the sense of smell is the most sensitive sense of the dog and the sense of hearing comes a very close second. These ultra sensitive senses are the reasons why dogs excel in protection work. Dogs are relied to alert humans to the presence of intruders.
The anatomical characteristics of human and canine ears are almost the same but a dog’s ears are not “wired up” the same as human’s thus the hearing ability of dogs are superior to what humans have. The difference in hearing ability can be due to the type of ears as while human ears are practically immobile because of the way they are attached to the head, dogs ears that are composed of 18 or more muscles are highly movable. The outermost section of a dog’s ears can be tilted, rotated and swiveled independently to capture sounds more efficiently. By moving the ears like a satellite dish, the dog can turn the ears to the exact point where the sound is coming from to better pick up the sound. Law enforcers that use canines take advantage of the dog’s unique ability to move the ears as often times, the direction of the ears discloses the location of a suspect. The hearing sensitivity of a dog remains the same even if the sound is muffled by floppy ears. Bloodhounds and other floppy eared breeds can still hear much better than humans.
The skill of a dog’s ears to pick up sound independently could mean that the dog will be inundated with cornucopia of sounds. Loud sounds that are picked up simultaneously will surely be overwhelming to humans. Not many dog owners are aware of the pet’s ability to filter sound. Humans will surely be pestered by the noise created by playing children especially if more noise is contributed by a blaring stereo but this din will have no effect on a sleeping dog.
Dogs have a unique knack of counteracting their sensitive hearing abilities. Dogs have this effective trick of filtering sounds. A dog that would sleep through a jumble of discordant sounds but would rouse at once at the crackling sound of the kibble wrapper is showing its ability to screen sounds.
