Dog attacks on humans that range from minor to severe injuries are not uncommon given the amount of time humans spend with dogs. Every year more than four million dog owners and non-dog owners needs medical attention for minor to fatal injuries resulting from dog attacks. Dogs have different personalities and while some would be crowned as most congenial pets others noted to have aggressive personalities are trained for protection work. The significant difference dogs made to humans way of life is probably the reason why dogs are branded as man’s best friends. After domestication these animals have proven their worth as the affectionate and steadfast companions of man. Dogs have the wolves for ancestors and in spite of being tamed, the aggressive nature and the high prey drive will kick in from time to time. A situation in the environment will trigger the latent ferocious nature of a gentle dog and the dog will attack.

Dogs have the strength to knock people down. The jaws and the needle sharp teeth that can deliver hundreds of pounds of pressure can cause fatal injuries. Dogs are the most popular choice for a pet as these animals form a strong bond with their owners. However, because of the increasing number of dog attack incidents some people can’t help but be wary whenever a dog is seen.

Why do dogs show aggression? Bite and attack situations are often attributed to human behaviors. People have grown to love dogs, unfortunately, many pet owners are mauled by their own pets. Being pack oriented, a dog that is allowed to take the alpha male role will dominate other pack members. A pet owner may inadvertently allow the dog to be the leader of the pack. Pets are loved but it would not be wise to let the dog be the leader of the pack as the dominant behavior can develop a tendency to attack.

Dogs are territorial animals. A dog that perceives a threat to its litter, to its food and territory will attack. Never approach an eating dog especially if it has puppies as being territorial, the dog can attack. Dogs consider the human family as its pack. A dog believing that the shouts of the playing young master is a cry for help can attack the playmates.

Not all people are animal lovers. A dog reacting to a fearful situation can attack. Abused dogs adopted from rescue centers are noted to have the inclination to be snappish when approached even by the members of the family.
