What are the reasons why dogs sleep on their backs?
To the amusement of dog owners, dogs would sometimes show some peculiar and amusing behaviors. Dogs, unlike other animals that would simply lie down to sleep, would have to circle the sleeping area before lying down and then would take a curled up position to sleep. Sleeping on their sides or sleeping on the stomach with front legs tucked and the hind legs stretched out are some of the sleeping positions of dogs. Dogs that take on the flying squirrel position when sleeping will be an amusing sight.
Another amusing sleeping position of the pet is one where the back is against the bed or the floor and the legs are in the air like the legs of an upended table. Among the sleeping positions of dogs, this is certainly the funniest more so if the dog is dreaming and makes pedaling motions with its legs.
Dogs have been the most valued companions of man because of the way these animals have closely bonded with its human friends. Dogs would always want to amuse its human family thus it is not surprising if the dog would want to provide the family with something to laugh at even if it is sleeping. A dog that sleeps on its back with the legs up in the air as if waiting for the ceiling to fall down would certainly be a funny sight.
This funny sleeping position though has other meanings. Sleeping on its back can be the dog’s way to keep cool as it exposes the belly that is less covered with fur. A dog’s cooling system is rather inefficient as the few sweat glands are only found on the dog’s paws. This is why during hot weather, dogs are seen panting to keep cool. By sleeping on its back the belly that is exposed to colder air would also cool the body.
This rather funny sleeping position is a manifestation of the dog’s affectionate nature. With the funny sleeping position, a dog can get what it always wants and that is to be petted and kissed by its human family. A dog’s most comfortable position is to sleep lying on its back. Dogs are noticed to sleep on their back when they are inside the home where they are most secure. It will be noticed that dogs sleeping outdoors would not be so relaxed to sleep on their back. The most common position is one where the dog is all curled up. By sleeping curled up, the dog can protect its vital body parts from the attack of its enemies.
