She just doens’t like dry dog food for some reason, but she’ll eat everything else. I know I will have to provide a lot of chew toys for her teeth. But where do I start in knowing what kinds of food to give her??? Besides the vet, it’s gonna be a while until I see him. Thank you!!
I don’t want raw meat. Just food that I can prepare for her.

Natural diet is wrong for her. They’re meant to eat dog food. Chew toys won’t be able to provide her enough teeth health. A good thing is to slowly introduce dry food to her diet. Add a few to her dish, and then complement it more and more with time. She’ll eventually eat it too.

Have you considered a RAW or BARF diet. You can Google each and see if it would work for you. Many people are going to a RAW one as you can then even raise your own meat for your dog. Many meat rabbit breeders are raising rabbits for RAW diet feeders.

I raise rabbits for my family to eat but my switch my dogs over to RAW if I can raise enough rabbits to do so.

Cooking the food before feeding to a dog defeats the pupose of a “natural” diet for a dog. They would eat it raw in the wild.

“They are meant to eat dog food”

Then what did dogs do for the thousands of years before dog food was invented??

This really isn’t the best place to learn about raw feeding, as you get answers like the one above. I’ve put some links in the source area – please do a lot of research before you switch to raw. Good luck!

Add: Thanks Tony – off to the butchers now!!

tinned dog food has all the goodness and vitamins your dog needs, chew toys are good but not as a replacement to dog food.

Vets are the last people willing to help with raw feeding, so don’t get your hopes up too high. I think there are quite a few knowledgeable barf feeders around here
Best of luck, you are doing the right thing!

Why will you have to provide lots of chew toys? If you feed raw, she should get all the teeth cleaning she needs. Mine have been eating raw for about a month and they have absolutely NO breath odor and their teeth are about as clean as mine.

ADD: If you want to feed her a “natural diet” you shouldn’t cook it. It’s not really that much better than giving kibble.

My best advice to do some research on the Internet. There is no way I can tell you everything here. There are lots of very informative sites so you can make your own decision. One thing though NEVER cook bones they can splinter and get lounged inside your dog. Since you don’t want to feed raw just make sure and get rid of all the bones before you cook the meat.

    Good luck!

    Why no raw meat?

Check into Dr. pitcairns book. Here is his webpage: http://www.drpitcairn.com/
Order his book and read it.
He still suggest feeding the meat raw though.
keep in mind cooking the protein/meat is enough to change it so the dog is allergic to it. In its raw form it is generally ok to feed.

Or you can look into raw feeding.
