Ever try reading the bag where it lists the ingredients?

This is a tough question to answer because the truth is that no one really knows. Their meats are listed as meat -by-products which is an umbrella term that could be anything from good meat raised on a farm to slaughterhouse rejects that were deemed unfit for human consumption. It is also legal to include dogs and cats in these foods. Even the manufacturer’s do not know what is in there because it is blended together at a rendering plant before they receive it. Rendering plants can also add toxic preservatives like ethoquin. These do not have to be listed on the food label because they aren’t added by the manufacturer. This article will explain what’s really in pet food and how to choose a healthy pet food:

There is no meat, only by products. All the information is on the ingredient list. Next time you’re in a pet shop check it out.

These are the ingrediants, they don’t even say what animal is used for the meat. Notice the first ingrediant is corn, please avoid this food and find something where the first ingrediants are a named meat source such as chicken, turkey etc. preferably in a meal form.
Ingredients:
Ground Whole Corn, Meat and Bone Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with BHA/BHT), Wheat Mill Run, Ground Wheat, Natural Poultry Flavor, Wheat Flour, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Carmel Color, Vegetable Oil (Source of Linoleic Acid), Rice, Wheat Gluten, Vitamins (Choline Chloride, dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate [Source of Vitamin E], L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate [Source of Vitamin C*], Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate [Vitamin B1], Biotin, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement [Vitamin B2], Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement), Minerals (Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide), Added FD&C and Lake Colors (Yellow 6, Blue 2, Red 40, Yellow 5).

That’s what the class action lawsuit against them charges them with…
This food that was recently recalled.. Red Flannel or whatever.. Recalled for Salmonella?? Made in the same factory that makes Pedigree and Whiskas.. You tell me if they are using quality ingredients and have good control over production?? NO..

No, that’s not true, but Pedigree, and all supermarket dog food is junk – it consists of mostly fillers like corn meal, meat by-products (beaks, feet, ground bones), and preservatives.
Much better to get a good dry kibble listing meat as the first ingredient, ideally close to 30% protein and 18% fat – Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul, etc. are good – go a large pet store or feed store and read ingredients.

Nicole, first of all it’s ethoxyquin not ethoquin. It hasn’t been used in petfood for years. It is a preservative that is still used in HUMAN foods. Paprika and chili powder both have it in them.
I work in the food industry for humans. But much of what they do in the petfood industry comes from human food rules.
The other question that comes up all of the time, like this, is when people start talking about the petfood companies using roadkill, etc. for dog food.
First of all when you look at the amount of “by products” that come from companies that process poultry, beef and pork products, why would the pet food companies need to use anything else? They need MILLIONS of pounds of meat per month. We may not like to eat beef hearts, brains, etc., but our animals are not as discriminatory.
Beyond that, the pet food companies cannot take the chance on questionable sources. Can anyone say China?
Horse Whisperer – Care to give us a source for your statement that pet food companies use cancerous meat products in pet food?

I can’t say whether that is true but many dog foods use fillers like corn and grain as well as meat by products. Meat by products can be any part of an animal and are usually the meats deemed unacceptable(which can include diseased or cancerous organs) for human consumption. Many people are choosing to switch to all natural diet for their pets. Dogs like their ancestor the wolf, are designed to digest meat and small amounts of fruits and vegetables. You can find already prepared raw diet foods at certain stores. This raw diet claims to offer easy digestion with valuable nutrients, and offers a healthier immune system and better overall health with less stool that has little or no odor.
