What to do when the dog has a seizure
- naturaldogfoodseo in category: Uncategorized
Dogs are highly attuned to the feelings of their owners thus it is very important for the owner of a seizing dog to keep calm. Watching a seizing dog would be very stressful for a pet parent especially if it is the first seizing episode of the pet. It is not uncommon for pet owners to treat the dog as their baby thus watching the pet in obvious pain would be very upsetting. Watching the pet in a seizing episode would really break your heart but the thought that the pet does not really feel pain is comforting. A panicking pet owner will not help the dog at all given that when the nervousness of the owner is sensed, the dog will be more stressed.
To help the pet, the best thing a pet owner can do is to keep a clear head. Make sure to get other dogs and other pets out of the way. The trashing of the dog and the bared teeth may cause other dogs to attack. In a seizing episode the dog will lose control of its movements.
As the dog can’t control its movements it will be your job to prevent the dog from being injured. Slide the dog away from stairs. As the dog will thrash its head and body uncontrollably, you need to slide the dog away from hard objects.
Seizing dogs cannot swallow their tongue and anyone reaching into the mouth can get bitten instead. The dog can’t swallow its tongue but the jaws that close and open involuntarily can cause the teeth to injure the tongue. After the seizure, a pet with wounded tongue would find it difficult to eat. Tongue injuries can be prevented by placing a strip of rolled cloth across the tongue so that even if the teeth locks, the tongue will not get bitten.
Make the pet comfortable by placing a pillow or a folded towel under the head. A seizing dog can lose control of its body functions thus it can urinate and defecate while fitting. After the seizure, the dog is noticed to be disoriented and may have lost hearing and vision as well. The floor can get slippery from the dog’s urine and a towel placed under the dog will prevent the fall of a pet made disoriented or blind by a seizing episode. It would help if you can stay with the pet in a dimmed room until the seizure is over. Seizures can last only for a few seconds but cluster seizures can last for minutes. The soothing voice of the master would do a lot to calm the pet.
