Why do dogs have separation anxiety?

Dogs have always been considered as special pets because of the great influence they have made on people’s lives. Dogs form a legendary bond with humans thus it is not surprising if these animals are considered as man’s best friends. Dogs are truly man’s wonderful companion as aside from being loyal and affectionate they also form a strong bond with their owners. Dogs, unlike cats are entirely dependent on their owners.
Dogs would give loads of affection and joys to the family but a pet dog would not only expect to constantly receive attention but would want to be with the master always. Dogs are known as Velcro pets because of their need to be with the master always. Ironically, this close tie dogs have with humans is the reason why many of these animals are abandoned by their owners and end up in animal shelters or even euthanized. Because of separation anxiety a dog can develop destructive behaviors.
A dog owner is presumed ready to tackle the barking, chewing and other canine behaviors. These inherent trait however can develop into a destructive behavior in dogs suffering from separation anxiety disorder. A dog with separation anxiety is a well behaved dog whenever the pet owner is around but once the owner leaves, the dog will manifest excessive canine behaviors and become destructive. In severe cases, a dog that is having a panic attack for being left by the master can jump through windows or even mutilate its own self.
What are the reasons for a dog’s separation anxiety disorder? Apart from receiving attention and affection from the family, a dog would also love to be with is human friends always because they are social creatures. Dogs can be the shadow of the master as these pets follow their masters around. A dog that is separated from its owner becomes vulnerable, confused and have panic attacks. Being pack animals, dogs must be made to realize that the human is the leader of the pack. Dogs that were not properly trained would consider themselves to be the alpha male and the humans as members lower in rank. Either way, the dog would not appreciate being separated from the pack.
Abused dogs, abandoned dogs and dogs that have been transferred from one home to another commonly suffer from separation anxiety. Dogs that start to be destructive as soon as the master leaves home are suffering from separation anxiety disorder. The destructive behavior of a dog suffering from separation anxiety will be triggered if the master is seen taking the coat, picking up the car keys and opening the door.
