Health is an important factor in everybody’s life. Maintaining good health is a top priority of each and every one of us. This is also true with other animals. Just like us, they are prone to diseases and therefore need special attention pertaining to their health. Disease is any undesirable condition that is occurring in the organism’s body.
. It has different types. Examples are: infectious, genetic, skin, orthopaedic eye diseases and many more. Infectious diseases are those diseases that can easily be transmitted and contracted. I chose to discuss this type of disease simply because Since they are easily contracted, this kind is the most common occurring disease.
Dog’s Common Contagious Diseases
1. Coronavirus-The manner of transmission and symptoms are almost identical to that of Parvovirus. Gastro-intestinal tract is the one that is mainly affected.
2. Parvovirus- a disease that is spread via infected dogs’ feces, vomit or blood. Signs and symptoms include bloody diarrhea, lethargy, vomiting, fever, loss of appetite and dehydration. Their fecal material have distinct odor.
3. Canine Distemper- a disease spread via air or immediate contact with an afflicted dog. It has gastrointestinal, nervous and respiratory effect. Signs and symptoms consist of loss of appetite, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing and seizures. Symptomatic treatment is done for this disease. It has no definite treatment.
4. Lyme disease- a illness transmitted via infected insect’s bite. Signs include arthritis, lethargy, pain and loss of urge for food.
5. Leptospirosis- bacterial infection that is transmitted through nasal secretions, urine or saliva of an infected dog. It can cause kidney and liver damage.
6. Rabies- this is the most serious disease of all. It affects the dog’s central nervous system. It may lead to paralysis and death. It is also called hydrophobia because when dogs get this infection, they become afraid of water. Symptoms include, sensitivity to noise, uncalled-for biting, and paralysis.
7. Bordatella- Is an air borne bacterial infection associated with Kennel cough. Signs and symptoms include persistent hacking and coughing, nasal discharge and sneezing. If you think that your dog has this infection, try pressing the dog’s adam apple gently, if he coughs immediately, it is not possible that he has contracted the disease. In puppies, this may lead to pneumonia when not treated. Antibiotics are sometimes used for this infection.
8. Infectious Canine Hepatitis or Adenovirus- is spread via direct contact with the infected animal. Liver, kidney, cell lining and blood vessels are some parts that this affects. Symptoms include thirst, loss of appetite, liver damage, lethargy and inflammation of nose and mouth.
These infections are actually don’t have treatment. Our only approach regarding these infections are supportive or palliative therapy. Help them relieve the pain they suffer from through giving something for their symptoms.
These are only some of the most common dog infectious diseases. Being educated about your pet’s health helps your and the veterinarian diagnose for his possible illnesses. But of course, knowing this information alone wouldn’t help you treat your pet, you also have to consult your vet regarding these matters. Another thing to keep your dog from future infections:: Vaccination. It is better if you have them vaccinated in proper time.
